Female Deity (Mother Goddess)

Subject

Mauryan Art

Description

This piece of Mauryan Art tells us about how important religion was to this society. The material, terracotta, shows us that people of all economic backgrounds may have been able to create these sculptures. However, it also shows that perhaps wealthier members of the society can afford more elaborate designs on their sculptures or gain better access to these symbolic structures. Affluent members must have also surpassed the less fortunate in their feasibility to religious temples.
