Terracotta kernos (vase for multiple offerings)

Dublin Core

Title

Terracotta kernos (vase for multiple offerings)

Subject

Hellenistic vase

Description

"The small cups were used to hold votive offerings such as poppy seeds, wheat or barley."
"Medium: Terracotta
Dimensions: H. 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm)
Classification: Vases" as described from the metropolitan museum of art.

The vase is made of terracotta, and terracotta is a cheap material to use in art. As a result, this shows that this vase probably belonged to someone in the middle-class or in poverty. This vase was used as a votive offering for religious purposes. This suggests that even though people in poverty were scarce of resources, they still went out of there way to sacrifice their resources in order to give praise and honor to their religion. This also indicates that religion was important to people in poverty.
