I have chosen a jug with an African carrying two spears, and a pendant with the earliest image of an African. These two items are related because they both show an African person. This is important because it shows how the creators (the Greeks), perceived Africans (who were called Ethiopians back then). The Greeks had very high opinions regarding the Ethiopians and this can be seen in their art work. The amount of detail put into the face on the pendant demonstrates that the artist wanted to include every little thing and portray his/her feelings about Ethiopians; the features of the face are all soft and not at all harsh, and the face is smiling. This could demonstrate that the artist saw Ethiopians as happy and/or kind people. The figure on the jug shows that the creator also thought highly of the Ethiopians because the figure is carrying two spears, which could symbolize the power and strength of the African people. Whether or not they had such power and/or strength, the Greeks still perceived them as having both. From this lesson, I would like to learn if the Ethiopians thought as highly of the Greeks as they did of them.</text>

This dish gives us an insight that no matter your wealth or social level, if you were skilled and had access to materials, you could make something as beautiful as this. However, skills such as those to make the dish were taught and handed down, so if your family did not possess these skills before, it would have been difficult to learn. This also would have been time consuming, so if you were a laborer or farmer, you would not have had time to do create it. </text>

<text>I have chosen to compare two Mauryan art items. They are quite similar even though they depict different things. The "Dish with a Bee Pollinating a Lotus" is from 2nd Century B.C. and depicts exactly what the title says, a bee pollinating a flower, while the "Sphere with Scenes of Rites at the Shrine of a Yaksha (Male Nature Spirit)" is from 3rd Century B.C. is depicting a nature spirit. Many people have never heard of nature spirits, but they were very important to the Mauryan culture. I have chosen these two objects to compare, because they are both depicting nature. The Male Nature Spirit is tasked with caring for nature and bees can be found in nature doing their jobs. They pollinate flowers for a living and the Male Nature Spirit makes sure that nothing bad happens during those daily tasks. Obviously that doesn't mean everyone is all of a sudden going to care about Mauryan Art, but we should remember that even back in the early centuries they cared about their environment. They took care of their world and they believed in spirits who cared for nature.</text>
