Description

"Medium: Terracotta
Dimensions: H. 7 1/2 in. (19.1 cm)"
I have chosen a jug with an African carrying two spears, and a pendant with the earliest image of an African. These two items are related because they both show an African person. This is important because it shows how the creators (the Greeks), perceived Africans (who were called Ethiopians back then). The Greeks had very high opinions regarding the Ethiopians and this can be seen in their art work. The amount of detail put into the face on the pendant demonstrates that the artist wanted to include every little thing and portray his/her feelings about Ethiopians; the features of the face are all soft and not at all harsh, and the face is smiling. This could demonstrate that the artist saw Ethiopians as happy and/or kind people. The figure on the jug shows that the creator also thought highly of the Ethiopians because the figure is carrying two spears, which could symbolize the power and strength of the African people. Whether or not they had such power and/or strength, the Greeks still perceived them as having both. From this lesson, I would like to learn if the Ethiopians thought as highly of the Greeks as they did of them.
