Title

Terracotta Oinochoe (jug)

Subject

Hellenistic Vase Art

Description

"Medium: Terracotta
Dimensions:H. with handle 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm)
Classification: Vases" (The Met).
This jug demonstrates the poverty during the Hellenistic period because of its simplicity and dullness. There is nothing drawn on the jug and the material is cheap. This demonstrates poverty because other jugs/vases from the time period are all decorated and still look fancy, despite the fact that they are thousands of years old already. This shows the different classes in their society, even though it is just a jug; higher classes had fancy jugs while lower classes had plain, simple jugs.
