On the other jar two men are dressed in warrior garb with that being a helmet and a loincloth, while the woman depicted is wearing cloak-garb, similar to the subjects painted on the other jar. This shows the type of clothing worn by natives of the time that must have fit their climate and culture. On the other side of the jar, are three warriors holding weapons, the soldiers painted here were battling in the Trojan war. On the other jar we see dead warriors slain during the Trojan war, being carried off the battlefield. This shows that there was constant conflict, and the Ethiopian people were often subjected to danger, allowing for a not so subtle life. Also this shows that preserving the dead mattered in their culture.

This is connected with poverty because it shows who was wealthy and who was not. This particular vessels definitely looked expensive and only the rich were able to afford it. This also relates to poverty because it is very likely that the lower class created these vessels so that the rich would be able to enjoy any drink that was given to them in a beautiful flask. I am very interested to see how this flask was made, how long it took and how much effort was put into only one of these flasks. </text>

A tiny figure of Nike (the personification of victory) driving two horses is set amid the floral design above the boat-shaped forms on these extraordinarily elaborate earrings."

Both of the gold jewelry pieces tell us the hard and detailed work that the people did in that period as well as how humans were important aspects in art. First, these pieces of gold jewelry represent hard work because the pieces are very intricate and extremely detailed, which simply shows they put in days of tedious work. While looking at the “Gold earrings with disk and boat-shaped pendant”, one can see the intricate designs, flowers, and figures that represents Nike who is a figure that stands for victory and how he is driving two horses. There is also many seed like objects dangling from the top of the earring which contain small pearl like beads on them. Furthermore, in the “Gold earring with winged figure”, one can notice the twisted gold with the figure that also contains detailed flowers. The details that both these pieces of jewelry represent show the time and effort that it took to make them. Moving on, these elaborate pieces of jewelry both display humans in them which tells us the importance of human figures in that period of time. Since they worshiped Gods and figures, they incorporated those into their jewelry to remind them of those so that they were with them wherever they went and whenever they wore that specific type of jewelry . I would like to learn how people created these elaborate pieces of jewelry.

<text>I chose these two images because they reflect on how the Africans were simplified and objectified.

The first sculpture is from the Iron age, and shows how the Greek liked to generalize or oversimplify the “Ethiopians.” The face is exaggerated, with an exceedingly large nose/nostrils and wide, pursed lips. The hair doesn’t even look like hair, they just poked holes in the head and called it a day. Comparing the art to today’s times, I think that many people would say that this contributes to the animalization or historically racist caricatures of black people today. Not only that, but this is a pendant, people willingly wore this around their neck like it was jewelry. I think that also says something about the objectification of black people at the time.

While Africans were mainly used for entertainment purposes, my second image (from the Hellenistic period) shows that they had also been enslaved by the Greek. The little boy is naked, and the terracotta vase is meant for people to pour their water into. This is a bit contradictory considering that slaves were deprived of many resources, yet the artist wanted people to give him water. Comparing both art pieces, I find it interesting that when depicting Africans, the Greek often turned the art into an object (whether with utility or not). When looking at the Greek depicting themselves, they are often these huge, marble structures or statues with intricate detail, and rarely imposed as an object. They also happened to be clothed, but when they aren’t its regarded as symbolism for purity and is almost luxurious.

Further Questions: I am wondering why the Metropolitan only revealed one image that suggested slavery was prevalent in Greece. Keeping in mind that many affluent people collected Greek art, I wonder if they were as enthusiastic to purchase Greek depictions of Africans art. I also wonder if we have perspectives on any of the people who were enslaved or the artist’s that sculpted them. I think that it would make an exceptional conversation to speak about slavery in regards to divinity, and the justifications people had. </text>

However, people from Ethiopia were not the only ones "Ethiopians" represented. "Ethiopians" actually represented all Africans, or people with black skin. In the Hellenistic period, the minority they had previously held was growing. They were now athletes and entertainers, but they were also slaves. Slaves live in poverty, and there is no way to know if this was modeled after a slave or an athlete, but I can tell you that both Greeks and Non-Greeks were used as slaves and soldiers. This means that all of those people were living in poverty.</text>

A Bronze Torso from an Equestrian Statue Wearing Cuirass- Hellenistic Period (200 BC- 200 AD).

This Bronze armor could have been worn by a military officer in the Hellenistic Period (200 BC- 200 AD). This cuirass was normally worn by higher class people living in Greece. Artisans, who were likely lived in poverty, would have most likely made the cuirass for military officers at that time. At times these military officers were given land that was owned by the poor. The laborers who crafted the cuirass for the wealthy soldiers had to work under very difficult working conditions.

This sculpture displays a old nurse holding a small baby. When it states, "the child-holding nurse was a common character", I think of how the nurse could have been a maid and took care of the baby. This makes me think of the aspect of slavery and how little they got paid and how most lived in poverty. Although the lady is a nurse, she is old as it states. The fact that she is old and still working may be because she needs money to keep living. </text>
